The Marvel Cinematic Universe MCU is a media franchise and shared universe centered on a series of superhero filmsindependently produced by Marvel Studios and based on characters that appear in American comic books published by Marvel Comics.
The franchise includes comic books, short films, television series, and digital series. The shared universe, much like the original Marvel Universe in comic books, was established by crossing over common plot elements, settings, cast, and characters.
The first three phases in the franchise are collectively known as "The Infinity Saga". Marvel Television expanded the universe to network television with Agents of S. Marvel Television produced the digital series Agents of S. Soundtrack albums have been released for all the films and many of the television series, as well compilation albums containing existing music heard in the films. The franchise has been commercially successful and has generally received a positive critical response, though some reviewers have found that some of its films and television series have suffered in service of the wider universe.
It has inspired other film and television studios with comic book character adaptation rights to attempt to create similar shared universes. The MCU has been the focus of other media, outside of the shared universe, including attractions at various Walt Disney Parks and Resortsan attraction at Discovery Times Squarea Queensland Gallery of Modern Art exhibit, two television specials, guidebooks for each film, multiple tie-in video games, and commercials.
ByMarvel Entertainment had begun planning to produce its own films independently and distribute them through Paramount Pictures. Kevin FeigeArad's second-in-command, realized that unlike Spider-Man and the X-Menwhose film rights were licensed to Sony and Fox, respectively, Marvel still owned the rights to the core members of the Avengers. Feige, a self-described "fanboy", envisioned creating a shared universe, just as creators Stan Lee and Jack Kirby had done with their comic books in the early s.
Inat 33 years old, Feige was named studio chief. In order to preserve its artistic integrity, Marvel Studios formed a creative committee of six people familiar with its comic book lore: Feige, Marvel Studios co-president Louis D'Esposito, Marvel Comics' president of publishing Dan BuckleyMarvel's chief creative officer Joe Quesadawriter Brian Michael Bendisand Marvel Entertainment president Alan Finewho oversaw the committee.
In NovemberFeige said that "in an ideal world" releases each year would include one film based on an existing character and one featuring a new character, saying it's "a nice rhythm" in that format. While not always the case, as evident by the releases of Iron Man 3 and Thor: The Dark Worldhe said it is "certainly something to aim for". Again, not because there's a number cruncher telling us to go to three, do more than two pictures a year, but because of the very reason just laid out: it is about managing [existing] franchises, film to film, and when we have a team ready to go, why tell them to go away for four years just because we don't have a slot?
We'd rather find a way to keep that going. On expanding the characters in the universe and letting individual films breathe and work on their own, as opposed to having Avenger team-ups outside of Avengers films, Feige stated, it is about "teaching the general movie-going audience about the notion of the characters existing separately, coming together for specific events and going away and existing separately in their own worlds again.
Just like comic readers have been doing for decades and decades Knowing what we wanted to do with Edgar and with Ant-Man, going years and years back, helped to dictate what we did with the roster for Avengers the first time.
It was a bit of both in terms of his idea for the Ant-Man story influencing the birth of the MCU in the early films leading up to Avengers. In OctoberMarvel held a press event to announce the titles of their Phase Three films. Things were not set So the plan has been, since a few weeks before Comic-Con when we realized we weren't going to be able to do everything we wanted to do, is to decide 'let's do either something we haven't done in a long time, or something we've never done.
I thought that might be early August or mid-September, it ended up being [at the end of October]. But for the most part, in broad strokes that are broad enough and loose enough that, if through the development of four of five movies before we get to the culmination So that all the movies, hopefully when they're finished, will feel like they're all interconnected and meant to be and planned far ahead, but really can live and breathe enough as individual movies to be satisfying each and of themselves.
In Aprilon moving the universe to Phase Four and reflecting on the first three, Feige said, "I think there will be a finality to moments of Phase Three, as well as new beginnings that will mark a different, a very different, a distinctively different chapter in what will someday be a complete first saga made up of three phases.
But then you kind of reach an apex or you reach a climax, a moment where you go, 'This structure is really going to start to be repetitious if we do this again, so what do we do now? We're in the deconstruction phase with [Captain America:] Civil War and leading into [Avengers:] Infinity Warwhich are the culmination films. Everything before [ Endgame ] and everything after".
On the potential for "superhero fatigue", Feige stated, "This year , we've got Civil War and we've got Doctor Strange in November, two completely different movies. To me, and to all of Marvel Studios, that's what keeps it going. As long as we're surprising people, as long as we're not falling into things becoming too similar Those are three totally different moviesNote: Unnamed realities are not on this list.

Reese said, "[Deadpool] will live in the R-rated universe that we've created, and hopefully we'll be allowed to play a little bit in the MCU sandbox as well and incorporate him into that. During Phase One of the MCU, Marvel Studios lined up some of their films' stories with references to one another, though they had no long-term plan for the shared universe's timeline at that point.
Writers Chris Yost and Eric Pearson tried to follow the logic of the films' timeline when plotting the comic, and received "the seal of approval" from Feige and Marvel Studios on the final timeline. Wanting to simplify the in-universe timeline, the Phase Two films were set roughly in real time relating to The Avengers : Iron Man 3 takes place about six months later, during Christmas; Thor: The Dark World is set one year later; and Captain America: The Winter Soldier is two years after.
When Spider-Man: Homecoming was being developed, director and co-writer Jon Watts was shown a scroll detailing the MCU timeline that was created by co-producer Eric Carroll when he first began working for Marvel Studios. Watts said the scroll included both where the continuity of the films lined-up and did not lineup, and when fully unfurled it extended beyond the length of a long conference table. This scroll was used as the basis to weave the continuity of Homecoming into the previous films, such as The Avengers.
This timeline ignores the two "eight-year" continuity errors, but also contradicts the events of Black Panther and Infinity War by placing them in ABC : Agents of S. Hawkeye Ms. Marvel Moon Knight She-Hulk.

Black Widow Family. The reality of Earth has gone through eight different incarnations, all triggered by different instances of multiversal renewal, which constitutes in the destruction and re-creation of everything there is.
Little is known of most of Earth's incarnations. The fifth is said to have been a dark cosmos of deep magic, and the sixth was the universe where the paradise-like planet of Taa existed.
This seventh incarnation is the most widely known of them all, where the Earth existed, protected by heroes like the Avengers and the Fantastic Four. The seventh iteration of Earth suffered from an early death as a consequence of the multiversal phenomena known as the incursions. It is from the creation of Galactus that we mark the beginning of the Universe, though some entities such as Knull and Ego the Living Planet precede him.
Among the earliest races of beings to evolve and build mighty civilizations in the expanding new Universe were the mysterious Celestials and the various races of the Elders of the Universe. Another significant race to appear was that of the Watcherswho took upon themselves the task of observing the other races but were sworn never to interfere with them. The symbiotes are also among the primordial species of the cosmos, having been created at the beginning of the universe in order to corrupt and destroy it.
In time there arose the Kree and the Skrullswhose galactic empires were in conflict for millions of Earth years. But it was the enigmatic, nearly omnipotent Celestials, who first took notice of the seemingly insignificant world we call Earth. The Celestials first arrived on Earth roughly one million years ago to experiment on humanity's ancestors. They created two new races, the godlike Eternals and the grotesque Deviantswhile giving mankind's forbears the genetic potential to one day produce super-powered beings.
Additionally Mutants Homo superior also emerged as well and much like their Humans Homo sapiens counterparts they were derived from the Celestials. Meanwhile, great human civilizations arose in AtlantisValusiaand elsewhere, only to be destroyed by the Great Cataclysm. After the Cataclysm there was a new age of warriors and wizards on the surface, in which a sword-wielding barbarian rose to become the greatest monarch of his time.
Still later, powerful humanoids beings descend to Earth to seek worship as gods from the people of ancient Egypt and Greece and from the Norsemen. These were the times of legend, when beings such as Hercules and Thor first walked the Earth.
And when the gods departed, mortal heroes rose in their place. For example, in medieval times in England, the original Black Knight defended King Arthur from the many threats to his reign at Camelot. More centuries passed, and then new heroes arose in the 19th century American West.
With World War I came the first costumed heroes. But there were only a few, like the first Union Jack and their careers ended with the war.The Marvel Cinematic Universe is a shared universe created by Marvel Studiosset primarily in the reality designated as Earth within Marvel's multiverse system. Starting with Iron Manthe universe is comprised mainly of films independently made by Marvel Studios, that are always set within this same universe, much like Marvel has done with their comics.
The universe includes a series of short films, called Marvel One-Shotslaunched with each film's Blu-ray release starting with Thor and finishing with Thor: The Dark World. Starting with Agents of S. Other contents include a series of tie-in Comics and video games, released as promotional material to the films, all set within the same reality.
However, some of them, especially video games, do not match the events featured in other products following their release and are classified as non-canonical in this universe.
